  • OSI Fellow

    Life Members of OSI who have made an outstanding contribution to ocean and allied fields of Science and Technology are selected as Fellows by the General Body (GB) of OSI on a proposal from its Governing Council (GC). The recommendation of the GC is based on an evaluation of nominations received each year by a Fellowship Selection Committee. The following outstanding Indian researchers have been selected as Fellows by the OSI.

  • Dr. D. Srinivasan Endowment Award

    OSI instituted 'Dr. D. Srinivasan Endowment Award' in the fond remembrance of Dr. D. Srinivasan, former Director-NPOL, DRDO, a veteran Oceanographer and father of Indian underwater acoustics. This biennial award is to honor eminent Scientists/Engineers who made outstanding contributions in the field of Ocean Science & Technology for national development and their applications by the researchers in India. The award carries a citation, medal and a cash prize of Rs 50,000/-.

  • Prof. R. Ramesh Endowment Award

    OSI has instituted the ‘Prof. R. Ramesh Endowment Award’ in honour of Prof. R. Ramesh, a person of extraordinary scientific latitude with countless important contributions to stable isotope geochemistry, paleoclimatology, oceanography, biogeochemistry, and solid earth studies. This biennial award aims to recognize and honour bright young researchers making significant contributions to Climate and Ocean Sciences. The award includes a cash prize, a medal, and a citation.

  • Best Thesis Awards

    OSI has instituted biennial PhD Thesis Awards under different themes in Ocean Science and Technology in 2024 to recognize excellent research done by young PhD holders in the country as part of PhD programmes. The biennial Award consists of a citation, certificate, and a prize amount of Rs 10,000/ that will be given during the OSICON. There are a total of seven awards which are sponsored by senior scientists in the themes of ocean engineering, physical oceanography, oceans & atmosphere, chemical oceanography, geological oceanography, biological oceanography and marine microbiology and bio-technology.

    In addition to the Best Thesis Awards, OSI has also instituted a Biennial Cash Awards for Best Papers in different themes. The Best Paper Awards are constituted to recognize the Best Paper presented by young researchers during OSICON in different thematic areas. The Award will consist of a citation and a prize amount of Rs.5000/.

    PG Dissertation Awards has been one of the earliest awards instituted by OSI.Starting from the academic year 2018-19, the objective of the programme has beento motivate postgraduate students in the area of ocean science and technology. Under the programme, one award each will be given every year to meritorious PG students in the following themes viz. physical oceanography,oceans and atmosphere, chemical oceanography,geological oceanography,biological oceanography,ocean engineering &technology andmarine microbiology / biotechnology.

  • OSI-NIOT Endowment Ocean Engineering Award

    The Ocean Society of India (OSI) has very recently instituted the OSI - NIOT Endowment Fund for presenting Ocean Engineering Award and to support students in Ocean Engineering, created by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in the OSI. This Endowment Fund is intended to contribute to the development of research, training and capacity building in the field of Ocean Engineering and Technology in the country. The prime activity under the Endowment is the OSI-NIOT Ocean Engineering Award conferred annually to an academician, engineer or researcher to recognise his/her exceptional contributions, creativity and potential in Ocean Engineering and Technology. To be eligible for the Award, the nominee’s research/teaching/development after M.E/M.Tech/M.Sc/MS/Ph.D (and PDF, if any) for the last ten years must have been conducted in a reputed Indian institution/company, public or private. The Award carries a cash prize of Rs.1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh), a medal and a citation.

  • Alluri Satya Kiran Raju OSI Endowment Award

    The Ocean Society of India (OSI) has instituted the Alluri Satya Kiran Raju OSI Endowment Fund in loving memory of the Late Sri. Alluri Satya Kiran Raju, an outstanding young scientist who edicated his career to research and development in Coastal Engineering. On his untimely demise in 2025 at the very young age of 34, Sri. Raju’s colleagues and friends created this Endowment in his honour in the Ocean Society of India. This Endowment Fund is a permanent fund established by OSI through donations and is intended to be used for the promotion of coastal engineering research, training and capacity building in India. One of the prime activities associated with this Endowment is a biennial Alluri Satya Kiran Raju Endowment Award conferred on a young researcher to recognise his/her exceptional contributions, creativity and potential in Coastal Engineering. The Award includes a cash prize of Rs.40,000/- (Rupees forty thousand), a medal and a citation.

    The Ocean Society of India has instituted the OSI Early Career Professional Award in Coastal Oceanography, utilizing the contribution of Prof. Vethamony, one of the leading coastal oceanographers of the country. The award aims to recognize and honour bright early career professionals making significant contributions in the field of Coastal Oceanography. An Indian national under 40 who has finished his/her PhD and made significant contributions in the area of Coastal Oceanography is eligible for the award. The award will be conferred biennially to an early career professional to recognize his/her exceptional contributions, creativity and promise in the field of Coastal Oceanography. The award includes a cash prize of Rs.20000/ (Rupees twenty thousand only) and a citation.

    The Dr. R.R. Rao OSI Young Woman Scientist Award has been instituted by Dr. Rokkam Ramamanohar Rao, a distinguished physical oceanographer of the country, in OSI to recognize, encourage and honour the contributions of women scientists in the field of physical oceanography. The award will be conferred biennially to a young woman scientist of Indian nationality under 45 to recognize her exceptional contributions in the field of physical oceanography.   • Sri. Sundara Ramam Early Career Professional OSI Award in Physical Oceanography

    Late Sri. K.V. Sundara Ramam was one of the founding physical oceanographers of Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India. The Ocean Society of India has instituted the “Sri. Sundara Ramam Early Career Professional OSI Award in Physical Oceanography” in his loving memory, utilizing the contribution of his son Sri. Rama Brahmam. The award aims to recognize and honour bright early career professionals of Indian nationality under 40 making significant contributions, creativity and promise in the field of Physical Oceanography. The award will be conferred biennially and includes a cash prize of Rs.20,000/ (Rupees twenty thousand only) and a citation.
